There is one physiotherapist
and one assistant at the Physiotherapy Department of Bethany Home.
A total of 30 students are receiving treatment. Each student exercises
at an average of 3 times a week and each session is between 30 minutes
to an hour depending on his or her needs.
The most common disability is cerebral palsy and then other disabilities
such as brain damage, Down Syndromes, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida
and some rare syndromes.
The therapy programmes are based on the result of an initial assessment
and reassessments. The therapy might include positioning, handling techniques,
physical manipulation, and exercises on land or in water. The aim is to
develop movement and enhance stability, endurance, flexibility and strength.
Sometimes adaptive positioning equipment needs to be prescribed and this
is done in conjunction with other therapists as part of the therapy programme.
Nearly 60% of the students are severely handicapped, so emphasis of treatment
is on preventive and maintenance therapy for these students. Parents and
teachers are frequently taught about physical education and individual
handling techniques. The doors of the Physiotherapy Department are open
to people from the community who need physiotherapy help. The department
is equipped with therapy balls, wedges, walking aids, gymnasium equipments,
snoozel room and therapeutic swimming pool.
